В начале 2015 года Алексей Булдаков узнал, что у него злокачественная опухоль.
По его словам, грамотные и оперативные действия российских врачей помогли ему быстро встать на ноги. Благодаря тому, что актер вовремя обратился к специалистам, ему удалось диагностировать опухоль на ранней стадии.
Булдакову было назначено медикаментозное лечение, поскольку анализы показали, что опухоль злокачественная, но разрослась она пока минимально. Несколько курсов химиотерапии возымели свое действие.
Алексей Булдаков умер 3 апреля 2019 года в в Улан-Баторе (Монголия), где был на гастролях. У него оторвался тромб. Прощание с актёром прошло 8 апреля в Доме кино, похоронен на Троекуровском кладбище Москвы.
Первая жена - Людмила Павловна Кормунина, актриса, дочь народного артиста Белорусской ССР Павла Васильевича Кормунина. Для Людмилы это был второй брак, от первого она имела дочь Настю. Играла в фильмах «Полет в страну чудовищ», «Наш человек в Сан-Ремо», «Давай поженимся», «Гадание при свечах», «Голубой карбункул».
Познакомились они в Минске - Булдаков тогда приехал в Театр киноактера, где Кормунина в те годы работала администратором. Вскоре он сделал ей трогательное предложение: «Людмила Павловна, – неожиданно сказал он, отложив гитару, – будьте моей женой», - рассказывала Кормунина.
Поженились в мае 1985 года. Однако вскоре брак распался: прожили вместе всего года полтора - Булдаков уехал строить карьеру в Москву, а она не стала его удерживать. Людмила Павловна умерла 28 ноября 2016-го.
После развода с первой женой состоял в гражданском браке с женщиной, имя которой не называет. В 1988 году у них родился сын Иван Булдаков. Иван живёт на Мальте вместе с матерью и отчимом, окончил факультет менеджмента Мальтийского института туризма, работает в одной из гостиниц острова. Иван свободно владеет английским, мальтийским, итальянским и французским языками.
Вторая жена - Людмила Андреевна Булдакова, по образованию - педагог, работала директором обувного магазина. Они поженились 3 декабря 1993 года.
Государственные награды Российской Федерации: • 1999 — почётное звание «Заслуженный артист Российской Федерации» (26 января 1999 года) — за заслуги в области искусства. • 2009 — почётное звание «Народный артист Российской Федерации» (5 апреля 2009 года) — за большие заслуги в области искусства[5]. • 2011 — Благодарность Президента Российской Федерации (6 марта 2011 года) — за большие заслуги в развитии отечественной культуры и многолетнюю творческую деятельность.
Награды и звания субъектов Российской Федерации: • 2013 — звание «Почётный гражданин городского округа Краснознаменск Московской области».
Общественные награды: • 1996 — лауреат IX российской национальной кинематографической премии «Ника» в номинации «Лучшая мужская роль» за 1995 год — за исполнение роли генерала Михалыча в комедийном художественном фильме режиссёра Александра Рогожкина «Особенности национальной охоты» (1995).
Реализовался и как исполнитель. Еще в конце 1990-х годов совместно с Владом Забелиным выпустил альбом «Особенности национального шансона», где спел песни «С бодуна» и др.
В 2001 году как певец выпустил сольный диск с группой Евгения Бедненко «Хорус» «Обнимаю всех», куда вошли 14 песен, специально написанные для актёра поэтом Анатолием Поперечным и композитором Евгением Бедненко.
В феврале 2011 года вышел новый диск актёра «Старое танго» — поют Алексей и Людмила Булдаковы в сопровождении группы «Хорус» — песни Евгения Бедненко на стихи Дмитрия Здраевского.
11 марта 2014 года подписал Коллективное обращение к российской общественности деятелей культуры России в поддержку позиции Президента России Владимира Путина по Украине и Крыму.
