A new gas field has been launched in Libya, with a capacity of up to 1.42 million cubic meters per day.

The Chairman of Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC), Masoud Suleiman, announced the commissioning of the Al-Rashad gas field south of Brega. Its production capacity is approximately 1.42 million cubic meters of gas per day.

The launch of the field could provide an additional stimulus for the development of the country’s energy sector. New gas volumes will help strengthen the supply to power plants and industrial facilities, and potentially reduce the risk of power outages.

However, the scale of this positive effect will depend on actual production volumes, the condition of the gas transportation infrastructure, and the distribution of fuel among consumers.

For industry, additional gas supplies could create conditions for more stable operations, including in the chemical and fertilizer industries. In the long term, the development of the gas sector could support the Libyan economy and increase government revenue.

The country’s authorities intend to increase gas production. In September 2026, Libyan Oil and Gas Minister Khalifa Abdulsadek announced plans to increase production to approximately 113 million cubic meters per day within three to five years. Implementing these plans will require investments in gas production, processing, and transportation.

The announcement of the Er-Rashad project coincided with the 65th anniversary of the first shipment of Libyan oil for export from the port of Brega in 1961. According to Mr. Suleiman, this event marked a turning point in the country’s history.

In April, NOC announced three new oil and gas discoveries in partnership with Algeria’s Sonatrach, Spain’s Repsol, and Italy’s Eni.
The development of the oil and gas industry could open new opportunities for international cooperation.

In April 2026, representatives of Libya and Russia discussed the resumption of operations by Russian companies in the country. If the security situation improves, oil, gas, and infrastructure projects, including modernization of the gas transportation system and development of the railway network, could become promising areas of cooperation.

Rosatom and Teletech to Establish Energy Storage Manufacturing in Egypt

Rosatom and the Egyptian company Teletech have signed an agreement to establish the production of energy storage systems. The document covers local assembly, staff training, and the future expansion of production capacity within Egypt.

The potential output is 500 MWh annually. The project aims to support power grid stability as renewable energy generation expands, reduce reliance on imported technologies, and foster local technical expertise. These energy storage systems have applications in the power sector, telecommunications, data centers, the oil and gas industry, and the broader industrial sector.

Murad Aslanov, Director of Rosatom’s country office in the Arab Republic of Egypt, noted: "Local production of energy storage systems will reduce dependence on external supply chains."

For Egypt, the project aligns with its 2030 goals for expanding renewable energy and localizing technology. In September, Rosatom held discussions regarding the commissioning of power units at the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant.

For the first time, Rosatom is bringing a non-reactor technology to the African market: energy storage systems, which are critical for integrating solar and wind power generation. For Egypt, this presents an opportunity to reduce imports of finished systems and gain expertise in a sector currently dominated by Chinese manufacturers. For Russia, it offers a foothold in the value chain at a time when demand for energy storage in Africa is just beginning to take shape. Establishing production in Egypt provides Rosatom with a springboard for exports across the entire continent, where the need for grid stabilization will grow as more renewable energy sources are brought online.
