Что останется от души после смерти? Душа не даётся человеку готовой: она нарастает из того, что он не просто пережил, а понял. С этим Вольный каменщик согласится, но в одном месте поправит.
Суть взгляда такова. В человеке есть начало, которое делает его отдельным и неповторимым: сама возможность быть собой. Есть привычная личность — характер, вкусы, привязанности. Она складывается в этом теле и в этой жизни и вместе с ними кончается. Душа — нечто третье: та часть прожитого, которую человек прочувствовал, осмыслил и превратил в устойчивое знание. Яркое событие может оставить после себя одно лишь напряжение, а тихое понимание порой меняет человека навсегда. Согласно этому взгляду, после смерти сохраняется только переработанное, и тот, кто жил не осмысляя, уходит почти ни с чем.
Масону это знакомо по камню. От грохота грубый камень не станет кубическим: в счёт идёт только удар, который снял лишнее. Внутри человека идёт та же работа. Противоречивые желания тянут в разные стороны, и пережитое не складывается в целое, пока их не согласуешь. Об этом старый масонский девиз «Ordo ab Chao» — «Порядок из Хаоса». Душа — не груда впечатлений, а то, что из них удалось сложить.
Поправка же вот в чём. Когда разбирают старый дом, штукатурка, краска и перегородки идут в отвал — это личность. Хорошо отёсанный камень снимают бережно и пускают в новую кладку: так строили веками, и блоки старых стен уходили в новые. Но ложится такой камень уже не в мой дом, а туда, где он нужен. Если видеть в душе сбережения, которые надо пронести через смерть, она становится ещё одной собственностью, а забота о ней — скупостью, только более тонкой. Масон смотрит иначе. В правильной кладке камень держится не сам по себе: он опирается на два нижних и несёт два верхних, а вертикальные швы не совпадают — это и называется перевязкой. Так и понятое крепнет, когда его передали другим, когда они его проверили и когда на нём стоит что-то ещё. В русской масонской традиции цель Ордена формулируют как «самопознание и просвещение человеков для их улучшения»: мало познать себя, нужно, чтобы от этого стало лучше и другим. Утрата души в таком свете — жизнь, которая рассыпалась в песок и не дала ни одного камня для чужой стены.
След в человеке оставляет не одно сильное потрясение, а то, что он выбирал раз за разом. Так и форму камню задают сотни точных ударов, а не один сильный. Того, что лежит за гранью, масон не чертит: чертёж без обмера — гадание. Его работа на этой стороне, и она проста.
