You’ve surely heard that famous Halloween greeting "Trick or treat!" But how did this expression come to be? 🎃
The very idea of going from house to house in search of food dates back to the Middle Ages. In Britain and Ireland, the poor - often accompanied by their children - visited homes offering prayers for the souls of the departed in exchange for special "soul cakes."
The expression as we know it today originated in North America. The first printed references to the phrase "trick or treat" appeared in Canada and the United States around the turn of the 1920s and 1930s.
A century ago, Halloween pranks pulled by teenagers could be quite harsh: kids might smear windows with tar, steal garden gates, or overturn carts. To protect their property, adults began essentially "buying off" the youngsters with candies and homemade baked goods.
The custom became firmly established in the 1950s, when the phrase appeared on screen - most notably in the classic 1952 Disney cartoon titled "Trick or Treat."
Today, it’s all just a bit of fun, but keep in mind: originally, it was a very real threat! 😉
Trick or Treat».
Сегодня это просто веселая игра, но помните: изначально это была вполне реальная угроза! 😉
"A time would come when I would be glad to be known as a surgeon with good handwriting. My notes in the chart perhaps gave some intimation of similar skills with a knife (though I will say it is not a rule, and the converse isn't true: chicken-scratch scribbles aren't a sign of poor technique in the theater)". – Abraham Verghese, "Cutting for Stone"
The aphorism "Tempus vulnera sanat" is usually translated from Latin as "Time heals wounds." It is one of the most famous proverbial expressions in history - one that has transcended the realm of medicine to become a profound philosophy of life.
This phrase carries two significant meanings:
💫 Since ancient times, physicians have observed that the human body possesses a powerful capacity for self-repair. If a wound is kept clean and left undisturbed, and the body is given enough time, nature itself will initiate the healing process. In medical Latin, there is a related expression: "Medicus curat, natura sanat" - "The doctor treats, but nature heals." In this context, time acts as the primary ally of these natural restorative forces.
💫 However, more often the phrase is used in reference to emotional pain such as loss, unrequited love, or major life upheavals. Like physical injuries, emotional wounds bleed and cause acute pain at first; yet, as time passes, the intensity of that pain fades, the individual adapts, and emotional healing begins.
Pinpointing the exact origin of this specific Latin phrase is difficult, as the sentence reflects a piece of common folk wisdom. Nevertheless, a similar idea appears in the work of the ancient Greek poet Menander (4th century BC): "Time is the physician for all inevitable evils."
The Roman poet Ovid, in his work "Remedia Amoris" ("Remedies for Love"), noted that fresh wounds often resist a physician’s care, but over time, they become amenable to treatment.
You might use this phrase as a therapeutic reminder during difficult moments. 🧘♀️
