В 18 лет он сдержал обещание. И продолжал приходить на сдачу, хотя не любил иглы и отворачивался, когда вводили иглу.
Позже врачи обнаружили в его крови редкие антитела. Их использовали для производства препарата Anti-D, который помогает защитить детей от опасных последствий резус-конфликта во время беременности.
Больше 60 лет Джеймс сдавал кровь, а затем плазму. За это время — 1173 донации. По оценке австралийской службы крови, его вклад помог спасти около 2,4 миллиона малышей.

1 сентября 2004 года семилетний Георгий Ильин пришёл на школьную линейку в Беслане. Он только перешёл во второй класс и даже представить не мог, что этот день навсегда изменит его жизнь. Когда раздались первые выстрелы, мальчик подумал, что кто-то лопает воздушные шарики. Но вскоре вооружённые террористы согнали детей, родителей и учителей в спортивный зал школы № 1.
Вместе с Георгием в заложниках оказались его старшая двоюродная сестра и двое её маленьких детей. Почти трое суток людей удерживали без нормального доступа к воде и пище. В душном спортзале находились сотни детей, вокруг была взрывчатка, а вооружённые боевики угрожали заложникам. 3 сентября прогремели взрывы. Незадолго до одного из них Георгий отошёл от родственников на несколько шагов. Именно это спасло ему жизнь. Его сестра и двое её детей погибли.
Сам мальчик получил осколочные ранения ноги, но в состоянии шока практически не чувствовал боли. Георгий бросился к разбитому окну и сумел выбраться из здания. Позже его доставили в больницу, где родители наконец нашли сына живым. Именно в первые минуты после спасения журналисты сделали знаменитую фотографию: истощённый мальчик сжимает кулаки и кричит от пережитого ужаса. Снимок облетел весь мир и стал одним из самых узнаваемых символов трагедии в Беслане.
После теракта Георгию предстояли лечение, операции и долгая реабилитация. Пережитое повлияло и на выбор будущей профессии. Сначала он мечтал служить в спецназе, но затем решил стать врачом. Георгий поступил в Северо-Осетинскую государственную медицинскую академию. Ещё во время учёбы начал работать в больнице, а в 2020 году добровольно отправился помогать пациентам с коронавирусом. В 2022 году он окончил медицинскую академию и впоследствии стал анестезиологом-реаниматологом.
У знаменитой фотографии тоже появилось продолжение. В 2006 году в Сан-Марино установили бронзовую скульптуру «Немой крик», созданную итальянским скульптором Ренцо Венди по мотивам снимка Георгия. В сентябре 2024 года её копию открыли в Беслане возле школы, где произошёл теракт. Сам Георгий признавался, что не любит смотреть на ту фотографию и старается лишний раз не возвращаться к страшным воспоминаниям. Сегодня он работает врачом, помогает тяжёлым пациентам и живёт обычной жизнью. Мальчик, которого когда-то спасали другие, вырос и теперь сам борется за чужие жизни.

История француженки Валери Бако началась в 1992 году, когда ей было всего 12 лет. В дом её матери переехал Даниэль Полетт, который стал отчимом девочки. Вскоре мужчина начал подвергать Валери сексуальному насилию. Позже его осудили за преступления против несовершеннолетней и отправили в тюрьму. Однако после освобождения Полетт вернулся в тот же дом, и насилие возобновилось.
В 17 лет Валери забеременела от отчима. Когда об этом узнала её мать, девушке пришлось покинуть дом. Не имея поддержки и возможности самостоятельно обеспечить будущего ребёнка, Валери оказалась в полной зависимости от человека, который годами издевался над ней. Она начала жить с Полеттом, а в 2008 году официально вышла за него замуж. Всего у пары родились четверо детей. Но семейная жизнь превратилась в продолжение кошмара: мужчина регулярно избивал Валери, угрожал ей и контролировал практически каждый её шаг.
Позже Полетт начал принуждать жену к проституции. Он оборудовал семейный автомобиль для встреч с клиентами, отвозил её к дорогам и следил за происходящим. По показаниям Валери, мужчина контролировал её даже через наушник, отдавая указания во время встреч. Так продолжалось около 14 лет. Она рассказывала, что боялась сопротивляться из-за постоянных угроз и насилия. Но особенно страшно ей стало, когда Полетт начал проявлять тревожный интерес к их подрастающей дочери. Валери испугалась, что девочку может ждать та же судьба.
13 марта 2016 года после очередного эпизода жестокого насилия со стороны клиента Валери находилась в автомобиле вместе с мужем. В какой-то момент она взяла пистолет и выстрелила Полетту в затылок. Мужчина погиб на месте. Позже Валери рассказала о случившемся близким, которые помогли ей спрятать тело в лесу. В октябре 2017 года женщину задержали по подозрению в убийстве. Около года она провела под стражей, после чего её освободили под судебный контроль до рассмотрения дела.
В июне 2021 года история Валери Бако потрясла Францию. На суде женщина подробно рассказала о десятилетиях насилия, унижений и принуждения к проституции. Её поддерживали дети, адвокаты и многочисленные люди, считавшие, что государство не смогло защитить её ещё в детстве. 25 июня присяжные признали Валери виновной в умышленном убийстве и назначили четыре года лишения свободы, три из которых условно. Поскольку оставшийся год она уже провела в предварительном заключении, из здания суда женщина вышла свободной. Когда объявили решение, присутствующие встретили его аплодисментами, а дети бросились обнимать мать.
