B2–C1 | Edmond Albius: The Boy Who Changed the Vanilla Industry
Read the text and fill in gaps 1–6 with parts of sentences A–G. There is one extra option which you do not need to use.
Vanilla is an orchid, and the fragrant “sticks” used in desserts are actually its fruit, which are obtained after a special curing process. However, growing vanilla outside its native habitat was once extremely difficult. Although the vines grew and flowered successfully, they failed to produce fruit, (1) __.
In 1841, on the island of Réunion, a solution was discovered by a twelve-year-old boy named Edmond Albius, (2) __. At the time, vanilla cultivation faced a serious challenge because the plants depended on successful pollination.
Inside a vanilla flower, there is a thin membrane (3) __. Albius discovered that he could lift this membrane with a small bamboo stick, (4) __.
His technique proved both simple and effective, (5) __. Instead of relying on natural pollinators, growers could now pollinate each flower manually.
The same basic principle of hand-pollination is still used in vanilla production today, (6) __. Yet Albius himself received no financial reward for his discovery.
Behind the familiar aroma of baked goods lies the story of a boy whose careful observation helped solve a major agricultural problem.
