Жила-была в одном светлом городе девочка по имени Марьяна. У нее были самые красивые на свете косички, которые по утрам заплетала мама, и папа Алексей, который мог подбросить ее до самого потолка.
Однажды папа подошел к Марьяне, посадил ее на колени и сказал: — Марьяна, мне нужно уехать. Далеко-далеко, на запад. Там сейчас нужна наша защита, и я иду защищать нашу большую Родину. Я — защитник, и это очень важная мужская работа.
Марьяна крепко обняла папу за шею. Ей стало немного грустно, потому что без папы вечерами в доме становилось тише, а чай казался не таким сладким.
— Пап, а ты скоро вернешься? — спросила она. — Я вернусь, как только выполню свой долг и прогоню всю темноту, — серьезно ответил Алексей. — А чтобы ты не скучала, я оставлю тебе подарок.
Он достал из кармана маленький, но очень тяжелый фонарик. Стекло у него было не простое, а из настоящего звездного камня. — Этот фонарик волшебный, — улыбнулся папа. — Он работает не от батареек, а от твоего сердца. Когда ты будешь по мне скучать, просто возьми его в ладошки, закрой глаза и крепко подумай обо мне. Если я в этот момент тоже думаю о тебе, фонарик зажжется теплым золотым светом. А если тебе станет страшно или одиноко, посвети им в темный угол комнаты — и там сразу станет безопасно, потому что мой свет теперь всегда с тобой.
В тот же вечер Марьяна заметила, что у них дома завелся маленький невидимый помощник. Мама сказала, что это Ангел-хранитель, который теперь присматривает за их семьей, пока папа Алексей далеко.
Как только за папой закрылась дверь, Марьяна взяла фонарик. Сначала было тихо. Но потом она вспомнила, как папа учил ее кататься на велосипеде, как они пекли блины в форме сердечек и как он громко и весело смеется. Она так сильно и тепло подумала о нем, что звездный фонарик в ее руках вдруг мигнул и загорелся мягким, уютным светом, похожим на огонек свечи.
— Он думает обо мне! — прошептала Марьяна и улыбнулась.
С тех пор вечера изменились. Марьяна не просто ждала папу, она стала его помощницей. По утрам она помогала маме готовить Алексею «передачу» — они сушили в духовке ароматные сухарики, которые папа очень любил, и рисовали открытки.
Иногда Марьяне становилось тоскливо. Тогда она брала свой фонарик, и он тут же теплел в ладонях. А однажды ночью за окном сильно завыл ветер, и старая яблоня в саду начала стучать веткой в стекло. Марьяне стало страшно. Она схватила фонарик, посветила на штору, и девочке показалось, что на фоне темного неба ветка рисует не просто узор, а папин силуэт, который говорит: «Не бойся, я охраняю наш дом даже отсюда». Ангел-хранитель тихонько подул на яблоню, и стук прекратился.
Шли дни, потом недели, а за ними месяцы. Марьяна подросла, ее косички стали длиннее. Она научилась сама застегивать пуговицы и завязывать шнурки, чтобы папе было чем гордиться. Каждый вечер перед сном она рассказывала фонарику, как прошел ее день, и была уверена, что папа Алексей слышит ее где-то там, на краю земли, где он защищает покой всех детей.
И вот однажды, когда за окном падал первый пушистый снег, в дверь позвонили. Марьяна бежала по коридору быстрее ветра. На пороге стоял папа Алексей. Он был в строгой форме, от него пахло морозом, а щеки стали чуть более серьезными, но глаза улыбались так же тепло, как и раньше.
— Папа! — закричала Марьяна и бросилась к нему на шею так, что чуть не сбила с ног.
Алексей подхватил дочку, закружил ее по прихожей, а потом крепко прижал к себе. — Я же обещал, — прошептал он ей на ухо. — Я прогнал темноту и вернулся к своим девочкам.
Волшебный фонарик в кармане Марьяны вспыхнул так ярко, что осветил всю лестничную клетку, а потом тихо погас. Теперь его свет был больше не нужен — ведь папа был дома.
