Согласно одной из версий, слово "Китай" происходит от древнерусского слова "кита", которое означает "связка жердей" - изначально стена представляла из себя вал, окружённый деревянным забором, сделанным из таких прутьев.
Согласно другой версии, слово "Китай" заимствовано из татарского языка, в котором имеет значение "средний", а учитывая то, что территория Китай-города расположена между Белым городом (который проходил в пределах нынешнего бульварного кольца) и Кремлём, эта версия тоже может показаться правдоподобной.
