Джон смотрел футбол, когда Алекс рассказал, что ИИ помогает клубам оценивать риск травм. Джон спросил, может ли компьютер велеть игроку отдохнуть. Алекс объяснил, что ИИ предоставляет информацию, а решение принимают врачи. Джон заявил, что не доверил бы компьютеру решать, когда ему отправляться на велопрогулку. Сара напомнила, как однажды он проехал сто километров под дождём, а потом весь воскресный день провёл на диване.||

#️⃣#️⃣#️⃣ Modern English: Can AI Help Footballers Avoid Injuries? 🤖⚽

#️⃣ A Footballer’s Biggest Enemy: Fatigue
Footballers train hard, play demanding matches and sometimes travel long distances between games. Their bodies need time to recover. But how can a coach know when a player is becoming too tired? Artificial intelligence (AI) can help. It analyses information about training sessions, match minutes, running distances and the intensity of physical activity. By looking for patterns, AI can help the medical team identify players who may be at greater risk of injury.

||Футболисты много тренируются, играют напряжённые матчи и иногда долго добираются до места игры. Их организму нужно время на восстановление. ИИ анализирует нагрузку и помогает специалистам заметить признаки повышенного риска травмы.||

#️⃣ How Does AI Spot the Warning Signs? 🔍
In July 2026, researchers published a study based on four seasons of data from FC Barcelona’s women’s first team. They examined 34 players and 83 non-contact injuries. One important finding was that the distance covered over the previous 21 days was a particularly useful indicator of injury risk. In other words, one match might not tell the whole story. The body’s workload builds up over time. AI can bring these details together and help coaches decide whether a player should train as usual, reduce the workload or take a rest day.

||В июле 2026 года исследователи опубликовали результаты исследования, основанного на данных женской команды «Барселоны» за четыре сезона. Важным показателем оказался суммарный километраж за предыдущие 21 день. Нагрузка накапливается, поэтому важно учитывать не только последний матч.||

#️⃣ When Rest Is the Smartest Move
Imagine that a key player has played several full matches in a short period. The next big game is only two days away. The coach wants to include the player, but the data suggest that fatigue may be accumulating.
AI cannot make the final decision. Instead, it gives the medical team more information to consider. The coach and doctors can then decide whether extra recovery, lighter training or a rest day would be the wiser choice.

||Представьте: важный игрок провёл несколько полных матчей за короткое время, а следующий серьёзный матч уже через два дня. ИИ может помочь оценить накопившуюся усталость. Но окончательное решение о тренировке или отдыхе принимают тренер и врачи.||

#️⃣ Can AI Prevent Every Injury?
Unfortunately, no. A player can still get injured after an awkward landing, a collision or an unexpected movement. AI cannot foresee every accident, and a risk estimate is not a guarantee. However, it can help teams make better-informed decisions. The goal is not to replace coaches or doctors, but to give them another useful tool to protect players’ health. Perhaps the smartest use of AI in football is not helping players run faster — it is helping them stay fit enough to keep playing.

||К сожалению, ИИ не способен предотвратить все травмы. Игрок может неудачно приземлиться, столкнуться с соперником или резко повернуться. Но искусственный интеллект помогает принимать более обоснованные решения. Его задача — не заменить тренеров и врачей, а дать им дополнительный инструмент для защиты здоровья футболистов.||

#️⃣ Real O’Connor Moment ⚽
John was watching Arsenal when Alex mentioned that AI could help football clubs assess injury risk.
“So, can it tell a player to take a day off?” John asked.
“Not exactly,” Alex replied. “It gives the doctors information. They make the decision.”
“Good,” said John. “I wouldn’t trust a computer to tell me when to go for a bike ride!”
Sarah looked up from her book. “Johnny, you once cycled a hundred kilometres in the rain.”
“And I recovered,” John said proudly.
“After spending the whole Sunday on the sofa,” Sarah reminded him.

#️⃣#️⃣#️⃣ Culture & Language: Halloween Games That Tried to Predict Your Future 🎃🔮

#️⃣ Forget Trick or Treat!
Long before Halloween became a night of costumes and sweets, people in Britain and Ireland played strange games to discover what the future had in store for them. Would they find true love? Who would they marry? Would they become rich? Apples, nuts and even ordinary bowls were believed to hold the answers!

Задолго до того, как Хэллоуин превратился в ночь костюмов и сладостей, в Британии и Ирландии играли в странные игры, чтобы узнать будущее. Найдут ли люди настоящую любовь? На ком женятся? Разбогатеют ли? Считалось, что ответы скрываются в яблоках, орехах и даже обычных мисках!

#️

⃣ 1️⃣ The Apple Peel Prediction 🍎
One old custom involved peeling an apple in a single, unbroken strip. Then you had to throw the peel over your shoulder. Its shape was supposed to reveal the first letter of your future husband's or wife's name. Imagine peeling an apple carefully, only to discover that your future love begins with the letter B!

По старинному обычаю нужно было очистить яблоко так, чтобы кожура осталась одной длинной полоской, а затем бросить её через плечо. Считалось, что её форма подскажет первую букву имени будущего супруга. Представьте, как старательно вы чистите яблоко, чтобы узнать, что имя вашей будущей любви начинается на B!

#️

⃣ 2️⃣ Nuts in Love 🌰
People sometimes gave two hazelnuts the names of two people who might become a couple and placed them near a fire. If the nuts jumped apart, it was considered a bad sign. If they stayed together, it could mean a happy future for the couple. Apparently, even hazelnuts had opinions about relationships!

Иногда два лесных ореха называли именами людей, которые могли бы стать парой, и клали возле огня. Если орехи отскакивали друг от друга, это считалось плохим знаком. Если оставались рядом — пару могло ждать счастливое будущее. Похоже, даже у орехов было своё мнение об отношениях!

#️

⃣ 3️⃣ Choose Your Destiny! 🥣
In an Irish Halloween game, several saucers held different objects. A person was blindfolded and chose one without looking. A ring could mean marriage, a coin wealth, and water a journey overseas. But choosing clay? That was traditionally considered a very bad omen!

В одной ирландской игре на Хэллоуин на блюдца клали разные предметы. Участнику завязывали глаза, и он выбирал одно блюдце наугад. Кольцо могло означать замужество или женитьбу, монета — богатство, а вода — путешествие за границу. А вот глина считалась очень плохим предзнаменованием!

#️

⃣ Real O’Connor Moment 😂
Lily peels an apple and throws the skin over her shoulder. Tom examines its shape.
Tom: “It looks like a T!”
Lily: “So my future husband's name starts with T!”
Tom: “Or it means you'll marry a tomato.”
Lily: “Tom, you're ruining my romantic future!”

Лили чистит яблоко и бросает кожуру через плечо. Том изучает её форму. Том: «Похоже на букву T!» Лили: «Значит, имя моего будущего мужа начинается на T!» Том: «Или это значит, что ты выйдешь замуж за помидор» Лили: «Том, ты разрушаешь моё романтическое будущее!»
#️⃣

The Language Corner 📝
🔹 to predict the future — предсказывать будущее
🔹 to be in store for someone — ожидать кого-то в будущем
Who knows what is in store for us? — Кто знает, что нас ждёт?
🔹 a bad omen — плохое предзнаменование

#️⃣ The Lesson ✨
Today, Halloween is mostly about fun, costumes and sweets. But old traditions remind us that people have always been curious about love, luck and the future. And if your apple peel looks like a T, don't panic — it might just mean tomorrow! 😉

#️⃣#️⃣#️⃣ Word Stories: WINDOW 🪟

#️⃣ A Window Was Once an “Eye of the Wind”! 🌬️

Today, a window is something we look through to see the world outside. But the word originally meant something much more surprising: “wind-eye”!

Сегодня window — это окно, через которое мы смотрим на улицу. Но изначально слово буквально означало «глаз ветра»!

#️

⃣ Where Does the Word Come From? ⚔️

Window comes from the Old Norse word vindauga, made up of vindr (“wind”) and auga (“eye”). English borrowed it from the language of the Vikings and Scandinavian settlers. The word appeared in English around the year 1200. Back then, a window could simply be an opening in a roof or wall that let in air and light — often without any glass!

Слово пришло из древнескандинавского языка, на котором говорили викинги. Первоначально окно могло быть просто отверстием в крыше или стене, пропускавшим воздух и свет.

#️

⃣ What Did English Speakers Call It Before? 📜

Old English had words such as eagþyrl, meaning “eye-hole”, and eagduru, meaning “eye-door”. Over time, window replaced these older words and became the everyday word we still use today.

До появления слова window в древнеанглийском существовали выражения со значением «глазное отверстие» и «глазная дверь». Со временем скандинавское слово вытеснило их.

#️

⃣ Real O’Connor Moment 😄

One windy morning, John opened the kitchen window.
“Dad, close the window!” Tom shouted. “The wind is blowing all my homework away!”
John looked at the papers flying across the kitchen. “Well, Tom, now you know why the Vikings called it a wind-eye!”
Lily laughed. “And now your homework has a window of opportunity to escape!”

В ветреное утро Джон открыл окно, и сквозняк разметал тетради Тома по кухне. Джон вспомнил про «глаз ветра», а Лили пошутила, что у домашнего задания появился шанс на побег!

The Lesson ✨

💡 Next time you look out of a window, remember: this everyday word carries a little piece of Viking history!

#️⃣#️⃣#️⃣ English Grammar: Verb + -ing or to…? 🤔

#️⃣ 1. Remember: doing or to do? 🧠

🔹 Remember doing something = you did it in the past, and you remember it now.

John remembers locking the front door before leaving for work.

Джон помнит, как запирал входную дверь перед уходом на работу.

🔹 Remember to do something = remember that you need to do something, and then do it.

Sarah reminded Tom to feed the cat, and he remembered to do it.

Сара напомнила Тому покормить кота, и он не забыл это сделать.

💡 Remember doing — вспоминать о прошлом. Remember to do — не забыть сделать что-то.

#️⃣ 2. Regret: doing or to do? 😬

🔹 Regret doing something = feel sorry about something you did.

Alex regrets spending all his pocket money on a new game.

Алекс жалеет, что потратил все карманные деньги на новую игру.

🔹 Regret to say / tell / inform = feel sorry about having to say something, often in formal situations.

John regrets to inform his family that he has burnt the pizza.

Джон с сожалением сообщает семье, что сжёг пиццу.

💡 Regret doing — сожалеть о сделанном. Regret to say — с сожалением сообщать что-то.

#️⃣ 3. Go on: doing or to do? ➡️

🔹 Go on doing something = continue doing the same thing.

Lily went on talking while Tom was trying to study.

Лили продолжала болтать, пока Том пытался заниматься.

🔹 Go on to do something = finish one thing and then do something new.

After finishing his medical studies, Alex hopes to go on to work in a hospital.

Закончив медицинскую учёбу, Алекс надеется затем начать работать в больнице.

💡 Go on doing — продолжать то же самое. Go on to do — перейти к следующему действию.

#️⃣ 4. Verbs that can take both forms 🔄

With begin, start, continue, intend and bother, we can often use either -ing or to + verb without a significant change in meaning.

🔹 It started raining. / It started to rain.

Начался дождь.

🔹 Lily continued drawing. / Lily continued to draw.

Лили продолжала рисовать.

🔹 Alex intends to study medicine. / Alex intends studying medicine.

Алекс намерен изучать медицину.

The last pair is grammatically possible, but intend to do is much more common in everyday English.

🔹 Tom didn’t bother locking the gate. / Tom didn’t bother to lock the gate.

Том не стал утруждать себя тем, чтобы запереть калитку.

💡 With these verbs, the choice often makes little difference, but the most natural form depends on the verb and context.

#️⃣ 5. One useful grammar tip ✨

After start, we normally say:

It’s starting to rain. ☔

This is more natural than It’s starting raining.

Когда дождь только начинается, обычно говорят именно It’s starting to rain.

#️⃣ The Lesson 🎯

Remember these three important contrasts:

1️⃣ Remember doing — remember a past action.

2️⃣ Remember to do — not forget a task.

3️⃣ Regret doing — feel sorry about the past; regret to say — be sorry to give information.

And don’t forget: go on doing means continuing the same activity, while go on to do means moving on to something new!

#️⃣#️⃣#️⃣ Idioms in Action: ELBOW YOUR WAY 💪

#️⃣ What does it mean? 🇬🇧

To elbow your way means to push past people or obstacles to get where you want to go. It can also mean working hard and pushing your way into a better position.

Прокладывать себе путь локтями, расталкивая других; в переносном смысле — пробиваться вперёд.
🔹 John elbowed his way through the crowd to reach the stadium entrance.

Джон протиснулся сквозь толпу, чтобы добраться до входа на стадион.

🔹 Alex elbowed his way to the top of his university’s sports commentary team.

Алекс пробился на вершину команды спортивных комментаторов своего университета.
#️⃣ Where does it come from? 📚

The expression comes from the literal action of using your elbows to make space in a crowd. Over time, it also developed a figurative meaning: pushing ahead in life, work, or competition. It is still used in modern English.

Выражение возникло из буквального движения локтями в толпе, а затем приобрело переносное значение — пробиваться вперёд в жизни, работе или конкуренции.
#️⃣ Real O’Connor Moment 😄
John and Sarah arrive at a busy football stadium with Tom and Lily. John starts elbowing his way through the crowd.
“John! You can’t elbow your way to the front!” Sarah says.
“I’m not doing that,” John replies. “I’m just trying to find the snack stand!”
Tom points ahead. “Dad, it’s right behind you!”
Lily laughs. “Congratulations, Dad! You’ve elbowed your way to absolutely nowhere!”
Джон пробирается сквозь толпу на стадионе, и Сара делает ему замечание. Он оправдывается, что ищет киоск с закусками. Том показывает, что киоск прямо за спиной у отца, а Лили смеётся: папа расталкивал всех локтями, чтобы в итоге не попасть никуда!
#️⃣ The Lesson ✨

💡 Elbow your way can describe physical movement or an ambitious attempt to get ahead.

Remember: it can sound negative when someone pushes others aside to get what they want.

Джон покупает в интернете «профессиональную печь для пиццы» за полцены, но получает игрушечную. Семья смеётся над его неудачной покупкой, а следующая шутка Джона тоже проваливается. Сара предупреждает, что такими покупками он скоро нарушит семейный бюджет! 😂
