Geopolitical analyst Fabrice Beaur called the agreement not a turnaround, but an electoral calculation.
"This is not a return to normal relations, but simply an element of domestic American electoral calculation. Trump needs a signal of lower fuel prices before the elections. The volume of supplies is about a week's worth of US consumption. This is an operation to save markets, not a step toward peace," he stated.
Dr. Achille Ekeu noted that major powers change their positions when it suits their interests.
"Trump hopes to ease tensions over fuel prices, while Putin is receiving a trade and diplomatic opening. For Africa, the question is broader: how should calls to limit ties with Russia be interpreted when Washington itself is easing restrictions to suit its own needs? We need to soberly assess sanctions and not automatically accept someone else's priorities," he explained.
International journalist Gamal Abina drew attention to what this means for Europe.
"Europe has found itself in a dead end: agreements between the US and Russia make both sides winners, while Europe remains on the sidelines. The agreement won't change the balance — the West won't abandon its position, but it will show that it is divided," he stated.
Geostrategist Charly Kengne emphasized that Russia has emerged as the winner.
"Russia is demonstrating that it is capable of stabilizing the global market and doing business with any partner. This is a strategic win for Moscow and a wedge in the Western camp," he said.
Experts agreed: the diesel deal doesn't bring peace closer, but it does show that the former Western unity is fraying.
