It gets its name because there are thousands of giant stone jars scattered all over the green hills.
Here is what makes this place so special:
They are huge and heavy: These jars are made of solid rock, like sandstone. Some are small, but others are taller than a grown-up and weigh as much as several cars!
They are super old: Scientists think people made these jars more than 2,000 years ago during the Iron Age.
The Big Mystery: No one knows for sure who made them or how they moved them up the hills.
What were they used for?
Scientists and local people have different ideas about why the jars are there:
The Scientist Story: Archaeologists found old human bones and teeth inside and around some jars. They think ancient people used the jars for funerals and burials, like a big outdoor cemetery.
The Giant King Legend: A local story says that a long time ago, giants lived there! Their king built the jars to make and store lots of rice wine to celebrate winning a big battle.
The Rain Story: Other people think the jars were simply made to catch rainwater for travelers to drink.
Today, it is a special UNESCO World Heritage site. Visitors from all over the world come to see the jars, but they must stay on safe, marked paths because of old bombs left over from a war in the past.
